Some Rural Residents Cannot Get Broadband Under the Recovery Act

The U.S. Government gave a boost to the economy through the 2011 Recovery Act Program. One of the many projects is the Broadband Initiatives Program, which let’s some rural residents subscribe to satellite Internet at a reduced price.

For those that are eligible, they get reduced monthly fees, free equipment leasing and installation, plus a number of other benefits. Best of all, the reduced price will not change for as long as the eligible individual subscribes.

Are you able to take advantage of the Broadband Initiative Program?

The Broadband Initiative Program is certainly welcome, but it doesn’t help everyone. There are limits to what the government and the satellite Internet ISPs can provide, so restrictions were put in place.

The Internet Recovery Act is available to you if you do not

*Already subscribe to rural satellite Internet
*Be a previous customer of any satellite Internet ISP
*Have the ability to subscribe to other broadband services from a phone or cable company
*Live in a rural community where the Dept. of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service or Dept. of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration has issued a loan or grant program.

For eligibility under the Broadband Recovery Act you must

*Have a rural address
*Only be able to get online through dial-up
*Go through a credit check (everyone except Vermont residents)
*Agree to a 12-month satellite Internet contract

Each satellite Internet ISP serves a different area

There is more than one satellite Internet ISP. But under the Broadband Initiative Program you may not have a choice, since the government created zones for each of the satellite Internet ISPs to serve. To know if you are eligible, contact a satellite Internet ISP.
