The 2011 Internet Recovery Act Program was the U.S. Government’s effort to stimulate the economy by spending billions of dollars in various programs. The Broadband Initiatives Program is one of the projects, and it makes sure that many rural residents without satellite Internet can get Internet for a reduced cost.
Some of the benefits under the Broadband Initiatives Program include reduced price monthly fees, free installation, and more. Best of all, the reduced price will not change for as long as the eligible individual subscribes.
While the government’s effort to stimulate the economy in rural areas is greatly welcome, some rural residents are finding that they don’t qualify for the Broadband Initiative Program. Restrictions on eligibility were put in place, since there are obviously limits to what the government and satellite Internet ISPs can offer.
The Internet Recovery Act is available to you if you do not
*Currently have a satellite Internet account
*Be a previous customer of any satellite Internet ISP
*Have the ability to subscribe to other broadband services from a phone or cable company
*Live in an area covered under a specific Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) or Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) loan or grant award
For eligibility under the Broadband Recovery Act you must
*Have a rural address
*Only be able to get online through dial-up
*Have an acceptable credit score
*Commit to a 12-month satellite Internet contract
Each region is served by a different satellite Internet ISP
Normally, you get to pick which satellite Internet ISP you want to go with. However, if you want to take advantage of the pricing under the Broadband Initiative Program, you may not have a choice. The government established zones for each of the satellite Internet providers. You’ll have to contact each ISP to find out if you are eligible.
